First week : Sharing Session with Mr Michael Brynntrup

This week, Film Study class had invited a very special guest from Germany, Mr. Michael Brynntrup.  He has a lot of experienced on experimental film and video. From that, we had a sharing session with him, he got to show his work to us and he asked the student to give him a question, any question to be answered by him according to the experimental film that he showed today but we are actually can give him any question about him or the experimental film itself. Our lecturer, Ms. Siew Wai said that we are actually would know what other people do in the other place, in this situation, we would know what is German culture.

This sharing session with Mr. Michael Brynntrup is like an introducing for film study, we actually would know what film is all about and how we see film and video as an art. So, as an opening for this class, we already got a picture what is film all about and we are also fortunately can watched six experimental film and video. All six films and video were originality produced by himself and his team.

For me, all the films and video that he showed is hardly and difficult for me to understand. On the ‘Question and Answer’ (Q&A) session, my classmate ask a lot of question and it helps me to understand a little bit about the video that showed to the class. I remember that one of the question that asked by my friend, why the experimental films and video are hardly and difficult to understand? I smiled when I heard that precious question because I’m also want to know what the answer. Mr. Michael Brynntrup said that we are actually needed to be exposed with a lot of experimental films and art films to understand the language of art films.

We actually exposed to the narrative films like every single day and we already understand the language of narrative film. We can easily digest that type of film but we infrequently saw the experimental film and that is why, we are actually seems difficult to understand the experimental film all about.  From that, Mr. Michael Brynntrup suggests that go to the internet, search the UbuWeb and watch the experimental films and video there. Try to understand and slowly digest the films and video and we are also need to open our eyes to the language of art films.

Other than that, one of my classmate also ask where Mr. Michael Brynntrup get inspired and motivated to pursuit this career as an experimental filmmaker and video artist. He answered that question and he said that he keep motivated when he saw the people around him even he is not in the German. He recorded and would continue to record what is around him. I think, Mr. Michael Brynntrup feel satisfied when he can make a film or video about what is around him. The film and video also is a reflection and expression to Mr. Michael Brynntrup and his culture.

Lastly, I’m fortunately had experienced on the sharing session with Mr. Michael Brynntrup, a Germany experimental filmmaker and video artist. This session is actually open up my eyes to look and think deeply to the films and video especially to the experimental films and video. We are actually needed to watch a film as an art; we are also needed to appreciate the film. I think this session give a picture what is film study is all about.
